1. Knowledge: Students of Fiddlemania will be taught about a large variety of Fiddle-related idioms and styles – including celtic style, old tyme style, bluegrass style, ear training, improvisation, world fiddle music and more! Students will have an opportunity to put this information to use throughout the camp, as well as throughout their lives.
2. Individual Performance: Students will have the opportunity to bring solo material of their own. Throughout the week, students will polish up and learn a variety of things from a number of teachers. Students will have master classes with a new teacher each day to work on their solo tunes. They will have the opportunity to sign up for private lessons with the teacher(s) of their choice to work on these tunes. They will be able to rehearse these tunes with an accompanist. Finally, they will be able to showcase their work in a solo recital.
3. Group Performance: Students will have 2 types of group performance. They will be placed in small groups and will rehearse with a teacher all week. The second type of performance group will be an “open” performance group, where students will form extra groups of their choosing. They will be able to sign up for lessons with any teacher(s), in addition to signing up for guitar or keyboard accompaniment. Both types of groups will be showcased on a thrilling student gala concert, the final evening.
4. Versatility/flexibility/individuality: Students will be offered the chance to learn many other instruments, such as the guitar, mandolin, bodhran, tin whistle, percussion, vocals and dance. They will be given the opportunity to engage in a number of “jams”; where a larger group of players who share their level will join in and just enjoy playing some tunes. Students will also be able to form their own groups this year, really allowing a student’s individual ideas to come forward.
5. Attending Concerts: One feature of FiddleMania that many camps do not offer is the chance to see the teachers in action. A solo faculty concert will take place, as well as a thrilling group concert, featuring select bands of the faculty. These special events are rare for a camp to offer, so we encourage all students to take advantage.
